“We’re going to use this as a GIS repository.” The county received a grant to conduct another flyover this coming fall to update the pictometry, which allows users to take a look at a building or parcel from five different points of view. “We’re going to become a warehouse,” Hilts said. Whereas there used to be several town-specific maps hosted on various websites - Hilts sited Clifton Park and Malta as examples - the county has taken on the burden of hosting one central site that has everything a user would need. “There’s not a lot of people who won’t get what they need out of this map.” The site averages about 200 hits per day, Hilts said, and the county is constantly looking to improve the map.

There are also options to print specific portions of the map or export a PDF version of the site. The parcel selection tool allows users to search for property based on its owner and address, along with selecting and comparing multiple parcels. With the “go to” tool, users can quickly travel to a specific election district, municipality, senate district, assembly district or congressional district. The identify tool allows users to find all public information about a specific parcel of land, including its property class, school district and owner. The draw and measure tool can calculate distances between locations, as well as parcel size, in six different formats. Users can then use a number of different tools to look up information.

When the site is first opened, several user-friendly video tutorials pop up that inform users how to interact with the map.
“Five years ago to today is just night and day as far as the information available at your fingertips,” said Troy Hilts, the county geographic information services (GIS) technician.
Tasks that used to involve a drive to the county offices and hours of manpower can now be done in a couple of minutes from the comfort of one’s own home. The site helps cut down the amount of time it takes for emergency crews, realtors, developers, municipalities and the general public to acquire public information, Kemper said. It also allows users to do a search to compare similar parcels. Around the same time, the county increased the map’s search engine and linked it with SDG ImageMate, which allows users to see a property’s assessed value, tax information and any photos of the parcel that were used in the assessment. The latest improvements came with the arrival of a Homeland Security grant one year ago when the map was linked with Google’s street view, allowing users to take a virtual stroll down many of the county’s streets.

The viewer first went online in 2005, but it has evolved from a primitive service to a full-blown information juggernaut over the years thanks to a series of grants. “We’re not providing anything somebody can’t get by coming to the county offices.” It costs the Planning Department about $6,000 a year to host the site, which is funded through its Board of Supervisors-approved budget. “Everything we have here is 100 percent public knowledge,” said Jason Kemper, the county’s director of planning.
